The Alan Turing Institute, named after Alan Turing who was a key figure in modern computer science and British LGBTQ+ history, is the UK's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. Since its foundation in 2015, Scriberia have collaborated with them several times. But earlier this year, we made a more permanent mark when we designed and installed a bespoke mural for its reception area at the British Library, to help create a sense of arrival and a lasting visual impression.
The artwork has transformed this reception area into a bright, vibrant and engaging space where people can start to ask themselves some of the important questions about artificial intelligence and data science.

Each concept of the A to Z of AI and Data Science was designed by our team, off-site, in the studio, before being printed onto vinyls that could be transferred to the institute's walls. Though many of our murals are hand-painted, vinyl prints allow for the intensely saturated colours and crisp lines we were looking for in this instance. The result: a very pleasing collision between the worlds of science and art.
"One of the key missions of The Alan Turing Institute is to encourage public conversation,” explains Mark Burey, Head of Communications and Marketing at the Institute. “The artwork has transformed this reception area into a bright, vibrant and engaging space where people can start to ask themselves some of the important questions about artificial intelligence and data science.”
“People are really taking time to look at the artwork and think about robotics, chatbots and other themes in artificial intelligence; it’s a real talking point,” Burey says. “It’s been really noticeable that people stop before they enter the Alan Turing space to reflect on some of this artwork and start having discussions.”
That's what we love to hear: Our pictures are making complex concepts accessible, and kick-starting new conversations. And, now they're on the wall for all to see, they'll be doing just that for years to come.
