Cabinet Office: Vision Mapping A Digital Future

When the Central Digital and Data Office was tasked with leading digital advancements across the government to increase efficiency and public value, we crafted a vision map, equipping them with a powerful tool to engage staff and pave the way for a digital future.

Challenge

The Central Digital and Data Office was established in October 2020 as the digital and data function within the Cabinet Office. It set out on a transformative mission to lead and support digital advancements across the department. Its vision: to build a digitally-matured Cabinet Office capable of harnessing data and technology for efficient policy-making and public value.

To achieve this, the directorate needed to distil a clear, inclusive, and inspiring strategic direction to engage staff, ensure alignment, and provide a roadmap for a digital future.

Solution

Over a two-month period, Scriberia facilitated a series of online workshops, attended by the leadership team and leaders from various functions within the Cabinet Office, designed to define the directorate’s core offerings and objectives.

Dia Nag, Head of Strategy and Digital Transformation, says: “We operate within a very complex landscape, straddling numerous business units. In these workshops, Scriberia helped us to clarify and articulate our role: what’s expected from us, what’s our remit, how people perceive our remit and what our target operating state should be.”

The outcome was a vision map that not only simplified the complexities of the directorates’ responsibilities but also powerfully communicated their vision.

In November 2022, the Central Digital and Data Office became Cabinet Office Digital with a new brand, a new vision of 'Enabling and Transforming the Cabinet Office' and a new operating model to realise the vision. Scriberia supported the launch; creating marketing assets, such as logos, banners and presentation layouts, as well as revising the initial vision map, to reflect the re-brand.

“It’s not just a picture, it’s our story. This was crucial for us to convey. It’s a really impactful piece of work.”

FIND OUT WHAT VISION MAPPING CAN DO FOR YOU

We worked to ensure the artwork aligned with the internal brand guidelines and represented the Cabinet Office with a central image - opting for the famous green Cabinet table.

Internally, the map has been used to communicate the vision across all levels of the organisation - in presentations, workshops, and staff training sessions. It has also been prominently displayed in numerous Cabinet Office buildings nationwide.

“I have gone across the Cabinet Office to every directorate to tell our story and present our vision and everyone immediately grasps it,” says Dia.

“And now, everyone wants their own! They see it and think ‘What a brilliant piece of work! Can we get this replicated across all business functions? It’s such an accessible way to present your vision.”

Externally, it has been presented at the Excellence in Central Government event and other digital transformation and government events and forums.

“Scriberia worked really hard with us from the get-go to deliver this piece of work, and they were incredibly approachable. I'd love to collaborate with them again,” adds Dia.

“Above all, we had a lot of fun delivering this. It’s my favourite piece of work and I’m really proud of it.”
