Animated scribing puts hope into action

It was a pleasure to attend the University of Oxford's annual research conference, using projection mapping - a unique mix of animation and illustration - to bring the content to life and create an engaging live experience.

Challenge

The University of Oxford's Social Sciences Impact Conference stands as a beacon of inspiration for researchers striving to positively influence the world around us.

Centred on this year's theme of ‘Hope into Action’, the two-day event brings together researchers from across the globe to share skills and explore innovative ways to address society’s challenges - through a programme of talks and discussions delivered by academics, thought leaders, policy makers and businesses.

The conference organisers aimed to deliver an engaging and impactful event that would resonate with attendees and, ultimately, inspire meaningful action and lasting change.

Solution

Ahead of the event, Scriberia’s animators combined elements of the event’s branding with other imagery to create an animated framework for our scribing team to work within.

At the conference, this animated design was projection mapped onto a 3m x 2m wall, where our scribes set to work creating an illustrated summary of the core themes and ideas as they emerged, resulting in a captivating and innovative piece of live content capture.

“By blending different forms of media, we created a more engaging live experience that surprised the audience in playful and unexpected ways,” says Emily Spicer, Scriberia’s Director of Creative Production.

Beyond the event, the artwork has been turned into an interactive visual that sits on the conference site, complete with video links and help text to add a deeper layer of information about the key topics of the event. This has helped make the conference insights accessible to the broader research community, and carry the momentum of the conference forward to drive positive change.

“Scriberia's wonderful team made a massive impact at our conference; bringing the content to life, engaging with speakers and delegates, and encapsulating the sessions through the illustrations and animation.”
