Pictures help pave the way to a scientific career

Scriberia joined the Academy of Medical Sciences to creatively capture the content of their annual barrier-shattering careers conference. The outcome: a truly uplifting and inclusive piece of digital scribing to share with attendees of the event and beyond.

The Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent and expert voice of biomedical research in the UK. It supports medical academics and researchers throughout their careers, with the aim of creating an open and progressive research sector to improve global health.

Challenge

Each year, the academy hosts a series of career development events for post-grads and early career researchers in academia focused on a range of topics, from Black Women in Science to Effective Communication - designed to remove barriers and pave the way for career growth.

For its latest event, the focus was on disability within academia. The aim was to explore the implications of having a disability, help academics understand the tools they need to progress their careers and hear from inspirational speakers. Capturing the event’s content - both from the speakers and attendees’ questions - into a concise summary was the academy’s goal.

Academy of Medical Sciences
Solution

As the event was virtual, our team provided remote scribing to capture these insights and shared the artwork in progress throughout.

“Scriberia expertly helped us capture and document the main messages discussed so we could continue to talk about it post-event.”

Laura Bello-Rodriguez, Programme Manager, Academy of Medical Sciences

Programme Manager Laura Bello-Rodriguez says, “These are really important events for us and Scriberia expertly helped us capture and document the main messages discussed so we could continue to talk about it post-event.”

We worked to ensure the right language was used to be inclusive and considerate to the needs of academics with disabilities.

Results

Our final artwork reflects the stories told throughout the event, covering some of the stereotypes and obstacles that academics with disabilities can face. It also takes the audience through ways they can address these challenges and how to find support when they need it.

The artwork was sent out to all attendees and shared on the Academy of Medical Sciences website, newsletter and social channels to help amplify its impact.

“Working with Scriberia was a pleasure - they made the whole process so easy and invested a lot of time really understanding the purpose of the event and what we wanted to get out of it."

Laura adds, “Working with Scriberia was a pleasure - they made the whole process so easy and invested a lot of time really understanding the purpose of the event and what we wanted to get out of it. We’re really happy with the final result and now have a fantastic asset to extend the reach of our work.”
