HMPPS Digital: Seeing the bigger picture

For our clients at Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, one picture — through several iterations — has proven itself invaluable since its creation in 2017.

    Challenge

When John Fitzpatrick began work at HM Prisons and Probation Service, he had a remit to revolutionise the service’s use of technology. But clarifying the strategies and structures already in place felt like an essential first step. With a host of different projects underway, it was difficult to see the connection between them and how they interrelated.

    Solution

Our vision map of the service acted not just as a visual guide to its structures and strategies, but as a means to bring ideas together from across a huge and complex organisation — making them part of one shared vision.

Working with our specialist team of illustrators, and using Scriberia’s fast, effective visual methodologies, John and his colleagues at the HMPPS Digital Studio in Sheffield created a vision map that surpassed expectations.

“To achieve what we achieved here, through traditional consultancy methods, would be a month’s work or more. But with Scriberia, you get there far quicker, with an output that’s far more effective than any I’ve used with any other methodology that I’ve come across.”

The finished vision map reflects HMPPS Digital’s priorities and progress over the years and remains at the heart of all that they do.

“To me, it’s not just a picture. It’s our portfolio, it’s our strategy, it’s part of our DNA,” John explains. “No one really talks about HMPPS Digital without referring to the picture — on social media, at the events we go to, and in the presentations we deliver. It’s our journey.”

He adds, “The speed with which you can get your message across, the value you get from punching above your weight in communications, and people being able to understand what you’re trying to achieve at a much quicker pace — there’s not a price you can put on that.”

Thanks to an ongoing relationship with our team, the HMPPS vision map has undergone annual iterations since its creation, ensuring it remains relevant to their mission and continues to deliver long-term value.
