Visualising Complexity: 10 Years with Resolve

Written by Gemma Todd | Sep 30, 2025 9:50:19 AM

Resolve are specialists in guiding organisations through change - especially where conflict, risk or complexity threaten to stall progress. Whether advising governments, shaping public policy or working alongside frontline services, their approach combines systems thinking, behavioural insight and a commitment to genuine cultural change.

But systems thinking is hard to communicate and culture is hard to shift. That’s where visuals come in: when you can picture the unseen dynamics, you can tell the story in ways that stick and give people a shared view of what’s really going on. And we’ve been helping Resolve do this for 10 years.

“We’re not just analysing the system - we’re visualising it. We’re helping people see the problems are interconnected so they can act differently. That’s why our partnership with Scriberia is so powerful,” says Dr. Luke Roberts, Founder of Resolve Consultants.

Early collaboration

One of our earliest collaborations took place in the youth custody estate, where Resolve had been asked to explore bullying. Attempts to run traditional interviews with young people weren’t working. The young people weren’t engaging, until Luke invited one of our visualisers into the room.

Luke explains: “I introduced Lauren and explained she would be drawing what they were telling us. They became absolutely absorbed in watching her draw - keeping their attention for 40 minutes was no small feat. But by the end, they were asking, How did you do that? How did you know what he was going to say before he said it?’ and ‘Can we come back later to see it finished?’ Even the prison governor came down to see what was going on.”

The resulting artwork didn’t just reflect the young people’s experiences - it helped amplify voices, surface insights and point towards solutions. Staff across the estate wanted to replicate the approach and the project quickly expanded.

"I’ve brought Scriberia into projects across government, health and justice. Because it works. It captures complexity without losing clarity. It makes people feel seen, and it moves conversations forward.”

“Since then, I’ve brought Scriberia into projects across government, health and justice. Because it works. It captures complexity without losing clarity. It makes people feel seen and it gets them excited about being the change,” adds Luke.

A visual language for complexity

As interest in systems thinking has grown - particularly in government - Resolve has found that live illustration is one of the most powerful ways to bring it to life.

“People are starting to realise you can’t solve problems in isolation anymore. But there’s still a gap in how to communicate systems change. Scriberia’s visuals close that gap - they carry nuance and narrative, which is what makes change possible,” says Luke.

When the pandemic hit and restrictions on in-person events came into force, Luke was understandably concerned that something would be lost in the move online but soon found his workshops could be just as effective and engaging in a virtual setting.

Whether at in-person workshops, over Zoom or inside public institutions, the impact is consistent: better engagement, deeper understanding and a shift from problem to possibility.

“We had a map in front of a prison minister recently. Ten seconds in, he said, ‘Ah, I get it now. What shall we do?’ That’s the power of the work,” adds Luke.

A Vision Map for Resolve

Most recently, Resolve asked us to put our pens to something closer to home: their own vision and values.

We helped create a visual map of their methodology - a tool they now use to communicate not just what they do but how and why they do it differently.

Luke explains: “We talk about our values and journey all the time, but we realised we’d never actually visualised them. We do this for clients all the time - so why not for ourselves?”

That map has become both a compelling marketing asset (clients often respond with,“That’s exactly what we want to do”) and a strategic tool, helping the team refine their own story.

“It’s become our differentiator. And every time I share it, the reaction is: ‘Wow, that’s amazing',” says Luke.

After ten years, dozens of projects and countless drawings later, we’re still proud to be Resolve’s visual thinking partner - and even prouder of the change we’ve helped them make visible.

“Working with Scriberia continues to be an amazing journey together. Whatever I can imagine, they can visualise - and they always do it in ways that engage and empower.

See complexity in a new light

Our shared belief in the power of visuals naturally leads to new ways of working together. And now, we’re opening the doors to that collaboration with our very first joint event: a Visual language for Complexity Workshop this October.

Hosted at Scriberia’s Inktank space in King’s Cross, Dr Luke Roberts (Resolve Consultants) and our own Dan Porter will show how visual metaphors and mapping can make complex systems more tangible. By drawing them out, we’ll explore new ways of seeing challenges clearly, pinpointing sticking points and sparking better conversations.
