Scriberia joined the Academy of Medical Sciences to creatively capture the content of their annual barrier-shattering careers conference. The outcome: a truly uplifting and inclusive piece of digital scribing to share with attendees of the event and beyond.

Challenge:

The Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent and expert voice of biomedical research in the UK. It supports medical academics and researchers throughout their careers, with the aim of creating an open and progressive research sector to improve global health.

Each year, the academy hosts a series of career development events for postgraduates and early career researchers in academia. These events explore themes such as Black Women in Science, Effective Communication, and more — all designed to remove barriers and pave the way for professional growth.

For its latest event, the focus was on disability within academia. The aim was to explore the lived experience of having a disability, help researchers understand how to navigate their careers, and hear from inspirational speakers. Capturing the event’s content — including speaker insights and audience questions — into a concise and lasting summary was the academy’s key goal.

Solution:

As the event was virtual, our team provided remote scribing — capturing key ideas and takeaways in real-time and sharing progress throughout the day.

Scriberia expertly helped us capture and document the main messages discussed so we could continue to talk about it post-event.

Laura Bello-Rodriguez, Programme Manager, Academy of Medical Sciences

We worked closely with the organisers to ensure the language used in the artwork was inclusive and considerate of the needs of academics with disabilities — both in tone and terminology.

Results:

The final artwork reflects the many stories told throughout the event. It addresses stereotypes and obstacles academics with disabilities can face, and also highlights practical steps, support networks, and tools to help overcome them.

The piece was shared with all event attendees and published on the Academy’s website, newsletter and social media channels to amplify its message and extend its reach.

Working with Scriberia was a pleasure – they made the whole process so easy and invested a lot of time really understanding the purpose of the event and what we wanted to get out of it.

Laura adds: “We’re really happy with the final result and now have a fantastic asset to extend the reach of our work.”
